Castle of Diodia (Loi castle)

The castle of Diodia stands on top of a hill, ca. 1km northeast of the village Diodia and 500m northeast of Sterna. The old name of Diodia was Loi, hence the castle is often referred to as the castle of Loi or Loino. It was built between the 13th and the 15th century. Originally Frankish, it was the seat of one of the feuds in the barony of Kalamata. The remains of a square two-storey tower are preserved at the hill top. At its western side there is a sloping approach with a cistern beneath it. The tower measures approx. 5X10m, with a probable height of over 10m. Heaps of stones and ruins of various buildings are visible in a radius of 30m around the tower. The trace of a wall can be seen at the north and west side, up to 2m in some places. Remains of an old fountain, probably dating to the ottoman period, are located in the middle of the north side of the outer enclosure.
