Monastery of Prodromos at Mele, Artemisia

The monastery of Mele, on Mt. Taygetus, lies west of Aremisia. Shortly after its abolition, in 1833, it was used to house the Dimakis schools, a monitorial system and a Greek school (3-grade middle school) [1854 – 1902]. A substantial part of the monastery’s fortification wall survives to this day, as is the katholikon, dedicated to Agios Ioannis Prodromos (St. John the Baptist). Wall remains are the only visible traces of the cell wings and other secondary buildings. The katholikon is a domed free cross church with a narthex, dating to the 16th or 17th century, a period when several monasteries were founded in the region. The interior is decorated throughout with wall-paintings belonging to two phases. Based on their stylistic features, the wall paintings of the nave and of the apse should be dated to the 17th century. The ones of the narthex were made in 1716, according to a dedicatory inscription. The monument has been restored by the Archaeological Service.
